Just two weeks into March and one powerful storm puts an end to the smooth wind cycle we had be enjoying for the previous 2-3 weeks of February and quickly reminds us New Zealand is a place of really volatile weather.
'Waroo weather' to coin a phrase.
I have been watching the swellmap and see the west coast is being pounded by a 7-8m swell. It's the largest swell I have ever heard of hitting all the main west coast breaks. If you're chasing a wave I'd have to say that Shipwreck Bay would be the pick of the bunch for this size swell. It might even line up down the whole 4km headland at this size. Now that would be amazing to see.
SHOP News
It really looks like the end of summer cruising and back to the solid winds that the
Waroo earned its great reputation in. So we are back to those punchy squally westerly winds that arrived last March (when we released the
06 Waroo), and stayed right through until the end of the year. Now for 2007 we have a choice of two BEST kites when selecting a new kite for the storms, the
2007 BEST Waroo or
Bularoo!
Yes,
two performance models to choose from, it's a tough decision for sure.
The
Waroo grew to become the No.1 selling kite in the world in 2006 and the new 2007 model is actually selling even faster, so BEST are in for a big year.
Here in NZ it's very busy too. The shipment we announced in last months Newsletter has rocked out the door and riders are raving about their new kites. Some sizes have completely sold out! This week we have just a couple of kites in each of the most popular sizes available, (13, 11, 9 and 7m). If you are ready for a new kite, please give us a quick call or order online now to secure your kite from the shop stock.
There is nothing worse than seeing a customers face when they turn up just an hour to late and miss the last kite on the rack.
But don't panic if this does happen, just as we did last year we can also offer riders the opportunity to place a deposit & secure a
kite on a future shipment.
The Northern hemisphere season is starting to take all the kites the BEST kite factory can produce. It's a bit of a fight to get our hands on kites. We are ordering stock now to cover the NZ winter months and the growing demand for the
Waroo and
Bularoo kites here.
 | 2007 BULAROO - KITEBOARDING is WAKEBOARDING. 'A real Wake style and Surf style kite!'
Our 2nd shipment of BULAROO kites is due to arrive this weekend or early next week. These are all 13m kites and we should have enough to cover all orders until the end of the month. (Sorry only one 10m kite left in stock!) I cracked open a new 10m BULAROO and rode it in everything from mirror flat water at the Waipu eastury to head high ground swell surf in 25knots of wind on Orewa beach to see what this new kite was capable of. It is one superb piece of technology. I enjoyed using the internal inflation system and loved the automatic one-way pressurising of the struts. What a great system. But what stood out the most for me was the performance. A rock solid kite to ride that allows you to snap your board up into the pocket of a wave and then power across the face equally well as it lets you throw down your tricks and feel the precision of the kite as your exiting one move and get ready for the next. This kite is so good I phoned BEST to ask why their marketing was kind of low key... They said "It's amazing eh! But...shhhh keep it a secret, or everyone will want one. The new Bularoo factory is just getting up to speed so give us time to up the production before shouting about it too loud."
So don't tell anyone outside NZ, lets get a head start on the rest of the world with the new BULAROO!

BEST Light Wind KiteWith the wind being so light and smooth in February I also decided to treat myself to a
17m Waroo. It has been amazing to compare it to the old "C" shape kites for power and range etc. The
Waroo's new flatter shape, although having the same amount of sail as the "C" kites, delivers much more power per sqm when you want it. And in light wind or when jumping that is exactly what you want. My 17m has had me out riding in winds ranging from as low as 8 knots up to a high of 18 so far. And in waves up to 5ft. So it's no slouch in light wind, it's a really useful kite to have in the quiver. And as for up wind performance, you just can't beat it. Stunning performance.
So if you're after a lot more kick in light wind this is the only kite to consider.
In one session I rode it on a dedicated 140cm NOBILE light wind board and was not only the only rider on the water but I was still going upwind in 8 knots. That was a sensational combination.
Kite Camp Video Clip (see http://www.anabatickiteboarding.com)OK so it's not the best riding you're likely to see but it really does give you an idea of just how nice the conditions are where we go for our
